AvD – Safety and innovation – experience it daily
Since its formation in 1899, the Automobile Club Germany (AvD) has always been committed to the interests / needs of the car drivers and in particular the road safety. This is also fixed in the statutes of the Automobile Club. By signing the EU Charta for road safety, the AvD took on a share of the responsibility to reduce the number of traffic deaths to a minimum. General orientation is the “Vision Zero – no one dies, everyone arrive at their destination”. This is what the AvD advocates on a national level – by being a member of the German Road Safety Board – as well as on an international level, through its membership in The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and its Road Safety Program. AvD President Rudolf Graf von der Schulenburg is part of the senate of the global Automobile Association FIA as its German representative.
Above all the AvD provides mobility and safety on all roads on a daily basis. Currently about one million members rely on their services. An armada of CO2 neutral vehicles, which the AvD supplies in cooperation with its partner Allianz Insurance AG, provides recognized effective breakdown service. This is one component of an innovative safety net, that was just enhanced by the state-of-the-art accident recovery technology: fast emergency positioning with mobile end devices via GPS, which the AvD offers its members in collaboration with the LifeService 112 System of the Allianz PositioningServices GmbH. Accident victims can alert the rescue coordination center via the emergency key on the cell phone and, in an ideal case, can be pinpointed exactly. That way the rescue teams can reach the accident site faster and the victims’ chances for survival increase. The Club isn’t only present in emergency situations though, its members can experience it daily by ways of the versatile service features and favorable conditions which are offered in all areas surrounding the car, travels or simply the daily shopping. The Großglockner High Alpine Road – The peak of the experiences.
For over 75 years, the Großglockner High Alpine Road has been considered one of the most famous and impressive scenic routes in the Alps. Every year, approximately 900,000 visitors enjoy the unrivaled view of the Alpine flora and fauna, as well as of Austria’s highest mountain, the Großglockner. The Großglockner High Alpine Road is considered one of the most visited tourist sights in Austria.
The excursion route was opened in 1935 and leads directly into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest nature reserve of the Alps. On the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Elevation, 2504 meters above sea level, the surrounding 3000-meter peaks, as well as the longest glacier of the Eastern Alps, the Pasterze, appear within reach.
Even during the construction the goal, to create the “most beautiful road of the Alps”, was kept in mind and care was taken not to outdo nature: the distinctively “artful” routing adds to the scenic drive. The road made the discovery of a high-alpine natural landscape possible, to which many people else would’ve never had access. The close-up experience of the glacier, as well as rare animals and plants enhances the consciousness that the beauty of this sensitive habitat is worth protecting.
The topics “sustainability” and “experiencing nature” play an important part along the Großglockner High Alpine Road: with the tallest e-pump in the world, 2369 meter above sea level and special rates for electromobiles, the consciousness for future technologies is being boosted. When the e-miglia 2012 crosses the Großglockner for the decond time, these efforts will be emphasized.
